During daily Mass on Tuesday at St. Paul's Newman Center in Laramie, WY, the lights flickered, turned off, and restarted several times as a loud wind steadily built outside the walls of the church. The
Casper Star-Tribune would later report wind speeds had reached 90mph, while some 2000 people lost power in their homes, according to Rocky Mountain Power. In the aftermath of the brief but powerful storm, the Red Cross even opened an Evacuation Center when the damage caused by the wind was found to include a gasleak on Lyons Street.
Highschoolers from the Church of the Holy Trinity were in attendance at Mass, visiting and touring the Newman Center neighborhood. They left the worship space to tour the Newman buildings upon the conclusion of the Liturgy and prepared for a barbecue, cooked by Campus Minister, Lillie Romeiser, and hosted by parish priest, Fr. Rob Spaulding.
As the barbecue began, a woman approached Fr. Rob asking for help moving a large tree that had fallen into the street. Holy Trinity youths and a handful of college students from the Newman Center made quick work of the tree, clearing the road and piling up debris for the City of Laramie to turn to mulch. Nobody was injured when the tree fell and after this good deed, the festivities continued as planned.
